What has been the toughest lesson you’ve learned?
I learned at an early age that I was going to be different; a freak or weirdo. It took a long time to come to terms with this. I remember a particular moment when I wanted Airwalks (Type of skateboarding shoe) but Nike Air was the hip thing to do. My mom said, “You can either be you or everyone else.” I chose the Airwalks.
What insecurity has plagued your life the most?
Aside from learning that I was always going to be different: nothing. I have always been secure in myself.
When do you feel vulnerable?
I don’t. At all.
What do you fear the most?
Not doing everything I possibly could get done. I want to constantly achieve, regardless of the achievement. Also, I am not a fan of alligators.
If you could change one thing in everybody’s mind – what would it be?
Inequality. Based on race, gender, income, etc. I’d like to live in an equal world. One where people are judged only by their actions.
What are you thankful for?
Music. Music has given me everything I have. Friends, peace of mind, relationships, good times, bad times, and time just the same. I can’t imagine my life without music.
What are you (as an individual – children and marriage aside) most proud of?
I am a broken record. Music. I am proud of my record label and the lives I have enriched by putting music out. I’m also the proudest standing on the same level playing the soundtrack of people’s night. I’m proudest when I’m told I can’t do something and I end up pulling it off.
What is, has, or will stop you from pursuing your dreams?
Age and Money.
What keeps you motivated to keep going – when the going gets tough?
I am motivated by hearing people’s music and art. I am motivated by my wife who always believes in my insanity.
Describe what love feels like to you.
Acceptance. The ability to live your own life with or without a compatriot. I once said, “Love is being in the same room with someone and you are both reading a book. No conversation, just an understood togetherness.” Love is a canine friend. Caring for something and getting nothing monetary in return. Love is music. The ability to dance like noone’s watching. To feel goosebumps from a song. Yes, that is the ultimate form of love.
What is something about yourself that you’ve always tried to hide?
From an early age I was taught to be tough and take no shit. This hard shell is hard to crack. If you see me smile, laugh, or dance around like an idiot, you have broken through the shell. I trust you.
If you could share one piece of advice with the world, what would it be?
Don’t give up on anything. Be confident. Accept that your anxieties are an ancient coping mechanism meant for cavemen fighting saber-toothed tigers. Our comfortable world should not breed anxiety but excitement.
What is your heaviest burden?
I want to be everywhere and with everyone at once. I can’t do everything. That kills me. That and the fact that my house can’t stay 100% clean.
